The Sage Leaves KABC

Larry Elder has done his final show at KABC in Los Angeles after nearly 15 years on the air. http://www.larryelder.com/  I met Larry Elder once at a grocery store in Burbank.  I told him how much I admire him and it would be my dream for him to be governor of California as this was around the time of the recall of Gray Davis.  I got him to autograph my wife's coffee cup. I had spoken to him on the air as a caller to talk radio a couple of times before he got so popular that I couldn't get through anymore.  Larry is a great force in this country and particulary in the black community. Larry is from South Central Los Angeles. Larry is a libertarian Republican.  Larry voted for McCain.  A surreal moment on election night this year was when two stated conservative white hosts on KABC, Doug McIntyre and Al Rantel argued with Larry for supported McCain as they had cast their lots with Obama.  Things got so contentious that Larry nicknamed them the Marx Brothers after Karl and not Groucho presumably.   I have listened to countless times as Larry was called a sellout, uncle tom, and you name it by black caller after black caller because he didn't tow the line on issues like welfare, affirmative action, and general government intervention in areas where he felt there should be none.  Larry contends that the private sector is preferable nearly all of the time to the government. Larry was and is right. In an age where we see the socialization of the financial sector and soon the automobile industry, it is a shame we won't hear Larry on daily "standing athwart history yelling stop," as the late William F.Buckley did.  Larry will be missed but hopefully will find a new home on LA radio. His voice, intellect and grace is needed now more than ever.  Here for your listening enjoyment is Larry's theme by Jr. Walker and the All Stars, Way Back Home http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uIuN37lQwuQ

UPDATE: I found my autographed Starbucks coffee cup from the Sage. http://www.flickr.com/photos/32730061@N06/3115177826/
