The Market Freefall Explained

Here is what I know about Obama's tax plan: 1.) he is going let the tax cuts expire which raises the federal marginal rate to nearly 40% 2.) he is going to do away with the capital gains tax 3.) he is going to blow the caps on social security meaning every dollar will be taxed at nearly 8% (16% if you count your employer's contribution or if you are self employed), 4.) if you live California or NY, you face income taxes around 10-11%. 5.) he plans on increasing the marginal rate on the "rich" to pay for his health care for the poor. Add it all up you are looking at marginal rates of around 65% or 2/3 of income. So why would an investor get into the market now when they could lose their entire investment on the downside and on the upside they can only keep a 1/3 of of their profits? Answer is they won't and largely explains a down DOW several thousand points since his election. Now Obama cared about the market decline, he could back off on the capital gains tax, commit to keeping the Bush tax cuts in place beyond 2010 and stop talking about removal of charity and mortgage interest deductions.  If he cared about the wealth of the American people being destroyed before our eyes he would do this.  If he cared about our retirement funds and college funds he would do this. He doesn't. He wants the government in control of everything and he at the helm. This is not about America. This is about Obama and his ego and ambition.

Socialized Medicine

A customer of mine relayed a story about his brush with socialized medicine while in Greece several years back. He broke his collar bone and went to the hospital.  He got his x rays and waited for hours for a doctor to show up. The doctor never showed.  He left the hospital with his x rays and without seeing a physician. He complained to his friends. His friends said that it was free. He responded that it was free but he didn't receive anything of value or put it another way it was worth every penny he paid.  One of consequences of getting things you don't pay for is that you accept mediocrity.  This is why the poor accept terrible schools and lawlessness in their cities.  They don't pay any taxes so they don't care.  Homeowners who put nothing down with substandard credit could walk away from homes easily because they had no stake in staying and paying.  When more and more people are on the government dole the end result will be more and more mediocrity.

Just Some Thoughts

The President compared following the stock market to daily tracking polls in politics.  First of all, can't he stop running for President and start being President?  Second of all as my new hero Jake Tapper http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/03/02/AR2009030200656.html pointed out when questioning Gibbs that if daily tracking polls after six weeks showed a consistent movement downward, it would indicate a trend. It would indicate that investors have had time to digest Obama's plan and vote on it by selling off the market consistently.  Obama wants to do away with capital gains tax and raise income tax rates for the "wealthy" to nearly 50 percent.  When you factor in social security (he is blowing the caps) and increases in taxes in many states like #1 tax state of California, taxes will be over 60 percent.  Nevermind that middle class in places like Southern California is 250k a year. Why would someone risk what little capital (money) they have left and buy into the market now?  The downside is you lose it all and the upside is you get 40 cents on the dollar?   The thing is the Obama doesn't care because the more people lose faith in capitalism, the more they put their faith in government ceding power to Obama and the Democrats.  Remember last year when the Democrats floated the idea of people trading in their 401k's in exchange for more social security from the government? Many of us scoffed at the idea. I fear now many Americans would take that deal that may be the second worse trade after Eve taking the apple.

It is important that we slow Obama and the Democrats down as much as possible to keep them from doing too much damage.  There are many Southern Democrats who came into power in 2006 and will be up for relection next year.  We need to make it clear that they are toast if they sign onto any more socialism.   We have a chance to take over the House seat vacated by New York Senator Gillibrand.  This is a conservative district.  We need to support 527's on our side. It will  cost each of us some money but less than if Barack Obama gets all his plans through without opposition.  We need to take back House seat by House seat and focus on Senators up for relection in 2010 who may be weak like Dodd CT, Boxer CA, and Reid NV.  Some 527s are : http://www.moveamericaforward.org/index.php/MAF/AdCampaign, http://www.ourcountrydeservesbetter.com/ and http://nationalrepublicantrust.com/

Off to the Tea Party tomorrow in Santa Monica, into the belly of the beast.  I will be sporting my Lincoln Gettysburg address shirt and will be bringing some green tea.

To Hell With Private Charity

My wife works in non profit and has her entire adult life.  To boil it down, she asks rich people to give money to her organization, an organization that benefits children in a real, lasting way.  Big Brothers Big Sisters pairs up disadvantaged children from poor families who are usually missing a parent, often a father, and gives them an opportunity to see life from the other side of their situation, to envision a better life that they were born into.  My wife gets wealthy people, foundations, and corporations, to give money to support the mentoring programs of the agency.  All charities are hurting now because of the economy.  People often give with their year end bonuses. There were few bonuses this year.  This is why it is puzzling that President Obama would choose to raise taxes significantly on the very group that supplies most of the funding to charities nationwide. It is further puzzling that in his new budget, he reduces the charitable tax deduction for the "wealthly" meaning couples making over $250,000 annually. http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/washington/2009/02/charitable-cont.html .  One may find it puzzling unless they know Obama like I know Obama.  Obama doesn't want private charity.  He doesn't want private health care. He doesn't want private anything.  He wants everything controlled by the state.  He is a socialist.  Europeans and Canadians give relatively little to charity. The reason?  Thanks to very high taxation they have less to give. Further, people in these countries feel that their "taxes pay for that."  Here is our future: everyone leading a mediocre existence in a highly bureaucratic society.  Everyone works for the government and people die waiting to get medical treatment.  I didn't drink the coolaide but you did America and we will bear the same fate as Jonestown if people don't rise up and do it quickly before it is too late. Tea Parties are tomorrow across the country. Find out where and participate : http://www.reteaparty.com/

The President Tonight

Apparently there will be a Reaganesque finish. They are talking about style and clearly not substance.  He is the anti Reagan. He is Jimmy Carter. http://www.thoseshirts.com/wbc.html I wonder how many people, maybe 30-40% of Obama voters, voted for Obama because they wanted a return to Bill Clinton.  What they got instead is what we on the right always feared, a return to Carter, down to the malaise.  The recently signed stimulus bill destroys welfare reform written by the Republican congress and signed into law by Bill Clinton. In typical two face Obama said he was wrong for initially criticizing welfare reform and that it clearly had been successful.  And somewhere burried in the thousand pages of the stimulus, it is wiped clean.  We used to have an incentive to states to increase welfare rolls by giving them more funding for more people on welfare. They always found more people to put on welfare.  Welfare reform of the 90's removed that incentive, the Democrats in Congress and President Obama reinstated the incentives.  Not that a trillion dollars would satiate the congress. They want another $410 billion. http://finance.yahoo.com/news/House-Democrats-propose-410B-apf-14450221.html .  I have had identity theft.  Someone got a hold of my credit card number and bought booze and stereo equipment to the tune of about $3000.  I think booze and stereo equipment is an improvement to what the Democrats are buying with our credit card and leaving us and our kids the bill. Here are the lyrics to a song in the 80's by the Rainmakers, Government Cheese :
Give a man a free house and he'll bust out the windows
Put his family on food stamps, now he's a big spender
no food on the table and the bills ain't paid
'Cause he spent it on cigarettes and P.G.A.
They'll turn us all into beggars 'cause they're easier to please
They're feeding our people that Government Cheese

Give a man a free lunch and he'll figure out a way
To steal more than he can eat 'cause he doesn't have to pay
Give a woman free kids and you'll find them in the dirt
Learning how to carry on the family line of work
It's the man in the White House, the man under the steeple
Passing out drugs to the American people
I don't believe in anything, nothing is free
They're feeding our people the Government Cheese

Decline and fall, fall down baby
Decline and fall, said fall way down now
Decline and fall, fall down little mama
Decline and fall, decline and fall
Give a man a free ticket on a dead end ride

And he'll climb in the back even though nobody's driving
Too ******* lazy to crawl out of the wreck
And he'll rot there while he waits for the welfare check
Going to hell in a handbag, can't you see
I ain't gonna eat no Government Cheese

Going to a Tea Party

Those of you who saw Rick Santelli on CNBC will hopefully be able to attend a New Tea Party on July 4th this year.  So far there are confirmed parties scheduled for Santa Monica Pier for Los Angeles, Lake Michigan for Chicago and Boston Harbor for Boston.  I also heard there will be a D.C. one as well. Hopefully this will grow like wildfire.  Please forward the link to the parties to everyone you know who cares about our gallop toward socialism.  The Democrats don't call it socialism, they prefer nationalism, national socialism didn't work out for the world in the 30's and won't work out this time either http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_socialism. Here are the links:

Paging George Orwell

The federal government is considering the idea of taxing mileage driven in addition to gasoline consumed.  Aside from the fact this treats economy cars and gas guzzlers alike, it means the government will have to put a GPS chip in your car and monitor how much (and where) you drive.  http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5iKyxhep3bfHageUJcgtOBo-pLQqgD96F6JO80 .  Liberals are totalitarians at heart but even worse, they do it for our own good. My friend had this C.S. Lewis quotation on his Facebook page. I think it is dead on: http://quotes.liberty-tree.ca/quote/c._s._lewis_quote_e1e7

"Of all tyrannies a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good
of its victim may be the most oppressive. It may be better to live
under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies.
The robber baron’s cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may
at some point be satiated, but those who torment us for our own good
will torment us without end for they do so with the approval
of their own conscience."

Just an Idea

http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2009/02/20/2496491.htm?section=justin I was in Ottawa a couple of weeks ago visiting my wife's family.  While there I read in the Ottawa Citizen that Prime Minister Harper was being criticized for not wanting a stimulus plan and for cuts to arts funding.  How did Canada become more conservative than the United States?  Here I propose a two part trade.  One we swap Vermont for Alberta straight up.  This way Canada loses some oil and beef but corners the maple syrup market completely.  That is how we sell it.  The other is we swap Obama for Harper.  They love him in Canada even more than we do.  I know you are thinking Harper wasn't born in the United States, but neither was Obama according to the blogs.

Abel Gets His Revenge

Senator Abel Maldonado sold us out. But us I mean the taxpayers of California, those of us who will stay.  My best friend plans to leave within two years.  Another friend of mine is planning on leaving with his family.  These are low six figure earners in other words middle class in California.  These are people who own their homes with mortgages.  Unfortunately, California hates them and people like them.  Oh sure they say they don't but are like the abusive spouse who keeps beating his wife.  The wife stays for as long as she can hoping he'll change, hoping she won't get hit again.  Eventually she leaves. It is just a numbers game.  The top 3 percent of taxpayers pay half the state's income taxes.  So in an effort to keep their constituents happy namely the labor unions, the Democrats and a few sellouts like Abel Maldonado, are going back to the well to get more money to cover the state's budget shortfall.  In good years the labor unions like the prison guards saw massive increases in their wages.  In lean years, their wages do not go down.  The ultimate problem for California is that the people getting the goodies, like the labor unions and the permanent underclass that keeps increasing, don't pay the freight. The freight is being paid by just a few, a few that will be leaving soon.  Even Bragelina live in France, probably for tax reasons compared to a California residence.  It will get worse before it gets completely hopeless.  The Democrats have destroyed California and New York, 48 to go.
