Welcome to the Tin State

No, I don't think we are the Golden State anymore. Perhaps it is just fools gold.  I have lived in California for nearly twenty years.  I married my wife in Laguna Beach. I bought my first and second home here. My two children were born here. I can't pay any more taxes.  We already pay over 600 a month for property taxes.   Income taxes are already nearly 10 percent.  Sales tax is 8.25%.   We have one of the highest gas taxes in the nation.  Car registration is linked to the value of your car which means we all pay several hundred a year in car tax fees.  This current budget with its massive tax increases may break us and force us to leave the state.  We are witnessing Detroit on a statewide scale.  The Democrats just need one Republican in the State Senate to cave and they will get their massive tax increases including a 1.5% sales tax hike, 12 cents a gallon gasoline tax increase, doubling of the vehicle registration, and a 5% surcharge on income tax.  I have no idea if that means marginal rates are going up or it is a tax on a tax.  Regardless it is too much.  If these tax increases go through, many middle and upper earners will leave.  The people getting the bulk of services will stay. The result will be Detroit.  The Republcan considering voting for the bill, the last holdout if you will, is Able Maldonado.  He must be called immediately and urged strongly to keep his vote no and to not support a tax increase on already hurting Californians.  His phone number is 916-651-4015.  Please do this immediately before he votes for the bill. Then it will be too late for us and California.

President Obama Signs "Stimulus"

While I do believe this is probably the best thing that could have happened to the Republican Party, it is a disaster for the country.  This will not work and will only crowd out credit and accelerate our demise as a country.  This is like that overweight person who is going to have their stomach stapled so goes on an eating spree before the operation.  Here unfortunately there are no budget staples on the horizon, only the demise of the dollar and the country.  Right now the market is reacting to Barack Obama.  It was off nearly 300 points today as Obama signed the bill into law.  Barack Obama can't be blamed for the state of the economy.  He did inherit an economy with serious structural problems.  The investor class makes decisions six months, a year, two years out.  The market has looked at his economic team and his plan for recovery and after carefully weighing the information has decided to panic.  The investor class has zero confidence in his plan, his team and Obama himself to pull us out of our current downward spiral.  In fact it would be better to do nothing at all than do this. Economic cycles eventually turn around.  President Obama and the Democrats have ensured that we remain at the bottom for a long time.  My favorite word for it comes courtesy of Monica Crowley, "we are witnessing the Barackalypse."

Happy Valentine's Day

I must say that I am sick of the Pajama Gram and Vermont Teddy Bear Advertisements and will be glad to get another year's reprieve.  I am going to get screwed today but not by my wife.  Before you think I am some sort of Clinton, I mean I am being screwed as a taxpayer by the State of California with a vote on a massive tax increase tonight http://www.sacbee.com/topstories/story/1625340.html.  In this case I wouldn't call it getting lucky unless you are referring to bad luck.  I'd light up with a cigarette but I think those taxes are going up too.

Judd Gregg Withdrawls Nomination

http://www.drudgereport.com/flashgg.htm . Apparently the yanking of the census from Commerce and the stimulus package were too much for Gregg to take.  Good for him.

Will the Last to Leave California Please Turn Out the Lights?

Even if they are CFL's http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Compact_fluorescent_lamp .  This is madness. California is on the verge of suicide. Oh, when states kill themselves, they don't blow their brains out after listening to Morrissey http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Morrissey . No, they just set themselves on a path leading to inevitable destruction.  We are witnessing California becoming a statewide version of Detroit.  In the new proposed budget deal California taxpayers will see : Sales tax increase to 9.75%, doubling of vehicle licensing fees, gasoline tax increase of 12 cents a gallon,  and my favorite the tax on a tax surcharge of 2.5% of your total tax bill including federal.  California is in the import/export business.  California is exporting the middle class and companies to Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado and otehr lower tax, lower cost of living/operating states.  We are importing 3rd world poverty and people who are net consumers of government services.  Neptune Orient Line, a steamship line, will join Hyundai MM, and Hanjin Lines in Phoenix Arizona.  There isn't an ocean within 400 miles of Phoenix but these companies choose to locate there because of the lower cost of operations and the better quality of life for it's employees.  Intel, a silicon valley company for the moment, is increasing production at their plants. No, not in California. That would be insane. No they are increasing their production in Arizona and New Mexico.  I received the below email from a good Republican in California who is resisting the Governor and Democratic Legistature's budget deal and urgers his colleagues to do the same. I am not hopeful.

  Senator Dennis Hollingsworth Releases Statement on Budget Proposal

“The tentative deal reported in the Sacramento Bee today, if supported by Republicans will be a disaster for all Californians, the state budget and for Republicans as a party. Punishing every Californian by increasing their taxes, especially in a time such as this, is not only wrong-headed for the economy, it is simply morally wrong to demand the people reach deeper into their wallets in order to continue to fuel the spending of state government. If this passes with Republican votes, there will be no reason for any Californian to vote for a Republican in the future. The people sent Republicans to Sacramento to be a blockade against tax increases. Once that wall crumbles, there will be no end to the expansion of taxes and spending. The people will rightly figure they can vote for Democrats and at least stand a fair chance of getting their entitlements and programs along with tax increases. As Republicans, we will only remain as the party that gives them tax increases and no programs. I have and continue to strongly extol my colleagues to vote against any tax increase.”

See California has been taxing the upper income earners including the upper middle class to pay for goods and services to the bottom half. So the people who benefit from the government largess do not pay for it.  In fact, they demand more and more and elect Democrats who give them more and more.  This is the Fall of a Republic http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alexander_Tyler in action :

A democracy is always temporary in nature; it simply cannot exist as a permanent form of government. A democracy will continue to exist up until the time that voters discover that they can vote themselves generous gifts from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates who promise the most benefits from the public treasury, with the result that every democracy will finally collapse due to loose fiscal policy, which is always followed by a dictatorship. The average age of the world's greatest civilizations from the beginning of history has been about 200 years. During those 200 years, these nations always progressed through the following sequence:

  • From bondage to spiritual faith;
  • From spiritual faith to great courage;
  • From courage to liberty;
  • From liberty to abundance;
  • From abundance to complacency;
  • From complacency to apathy;
  • From apathy to dependence;
  • From dependence back into bondage.
  For those of you in the rest of the country who think it is only California's problem, don't be so sure.  This is the path that has doomed Western Europe. Read America Alone by Mark Steyn http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/America_Alone .  And unless the current path is averted with President Obama's plan to tax the top 5% to give to the 95%, America itself is doomed as well.  FDR's New Deal did not get out out of the Depression but it succeeded masterfully in getting him reelected 3 times and kept the Democrats in power for 60 years.  This country cannot survive the likes of Pelosi and Reid for 10 years let alone 60.  And those of you in the rest of the world who don't live in America, that America is the world's cop.  Just think of how great things were in New York before Rudy stepped up law enforcement.  To quote Mark Steyn, "We are looking at the dawn of a new dark ages if darkness can dawn."

Leaving the Great White North

Leaving Canada. I had a nice four days here. It is cold here. I admire how Canadians manage to get on with things and don't let something like 20 below or snow or ice get in their way. Among my top ten boneheaded things I have done is me taking my child's diaper bag home with me. The good news is I am well stocked with diapers and wipes. The bad news is my kid is staying in Ottawa through Tuesday. My wife will need to borrow a diaper bag and purchase some wipes. I on the other hand get to cram the diaper bag and contents into my already stuffed bag to avoid a $15 checked bag charge by American Airlines. Also, since my flight arrives at 11pm, hopefully, I do not want to add to my lateness getting home tonight. I am not going to say the AA baggage handlers are slow but you need to use time lapse photography to see any movement.

Well, the flight actually arrived a few minutes early. Those of you who fly into LAX know what happens next. A plane was blocking my gate. Another was blocking the alley and while we waiting for those planes to move, the new airbus A380 had to taxi out of its gate which meant, according to our pilot, that the entire airport has to come to a halt and wait for the behemoth to waddle down the runway. Also, apparently LAX has already begun using funds from the yet unsigned stimulus package to pretty much screw up every way around the airport. The end result it took an hour to get from the plane touching down to me getting into my car.

Glad to be home but miss my wife and kids. My home is a house without them.

My Great White North Blog Part One

Greetings from 37,000 feet. Not quite 8 Miles high. I am in a Fokker. No I am not cursing the plane but it is the most accurately named aircraft made. It is the Mini Cooper of jets. It seats about 30 or so uncomfortably. I am on my way to Ottawa Canada to join my wife and kids who are visiting my wife's brother, his wife and son. The boy cousins are only 2 weeks apart but have probably not spent more than two weeks together since birth. It is hard when family is so far away. My brother in law used to live in Tulsa Oklahoma but had always wanted to return home to Ottawa. This year they did. Now they are three airports and three time zones away. I spent the night in Chicago and have been on the hunt for some thermal underwear formerly known as long johns. I found some yesterday that were $40 per pair. I don't know why they call them a pair since it is impossible to use just one like with a sock or shoe. I am very sorry for that Andy Rooney moment just now. It may come with age. Anyway I needed two pairs for the Great White North. One to wear and one to be in the wash. Spending nearly $100 on underwear would exceed my two year budget for undergarments by nearly $50. So I found 2 pairs for $15 each. My brother told me I got the wrong kind because I didn't spent $40 a pair. Apparently long johns are like wine to a degree. Not in the better with age sense but in the price/quality sense. I hear it is not necessarily true for wine but apparently it is a fact with long johns. I'll will test it out when I get there and worst case scenario, I can wear too pair at the same time but I will look like an upside down Popeye. I was watching the car show Top Gear this week and they were in Norway testing out cars in the snow. One test was to put a Citron, a French car and not a fruit, in a room where they reduced the temperature to 30-40 degrees below zero to test if they car would start. It didn't They did this with one of the hosts inside the car to see how he would manage in the extreme cold. Apparently his brain's ability to process information properly was reduced with each degree. This finally explains curling and Celine Dionne. It may also explain Patrick Leahy.

Andrew Breitbart

of Breitbart.com http://www.breitbart.com/ and Big Hollywood http://bighollywood.breitbart.com/ is now following me on Twitter http://twitter.com/home  as gopevangelist (my ID on twitter).  It may be the high point of my blogging existence.  It is probably all down hill from here.

UPDATE: I am one of 640 people Andy follows but I am on the second page. Anyway I do think everyone should check out Andy's websites above.  He is really trying to fight liberal media bias with the former and push back against left of center culture on the former. January 31st is his 40th birthday. Happy Birthday Andrew Breitbart.

It's Almost Tax Time

This post by Iowahawk http://iowahawk.typepad.com/iowahawk/2009/01/ask-the-tax-guys-1.html illustrates that the best way to avoid paying taxes, the biggest loophole if you will, is to be high ranking Democrat preferably a Obama cabinet appointee.

Let's see we have our new Treasury Secretary not knowing he needed to pay taxes. http://www.theledger.com/article/20090131/NEWS/901310306?Title=New_Treasury_Secretary__Tax_Man_Pays_Up
High ranking NY Congressman Charlie Rangel not paying taxes on real estate rental income. http://www.jacksonville.com/interact/blog/pontevedraman/2009-01-21/corruption_so_blatant_it_is_beyond_belief
and now Health and Human Services appointee Thomas (Mr. Rogers) Daschle owing more than 100K.http://townhall.com/news/politics-elections/2009/01/31/2nd_cabinet_nominee_runs_into_tax_troubles

Then there is Caroline Kennedy and others who have tax issues of their own. http://wizbangblog.com/content/2009/01/23/a-tax-problem.php

The new Treasury Secretary Geitner said he used TurboTax to calculate his taxes.  Being a high ranking Democrat and/cabinet appointee must have been a box to check.

The most infuriating part of this is that this is the party and these are the people who want big government and higher taxes, just not for them.  If this is not hypocrisy, the word is meaningless.

By the way, these are the same people who attacked Joe the Plumber, a private citizen, for owing a couple of thousand in back taxes.  Instead of confronting Obama in Ohio last fall, he should have asked for a job.

Reasons to Root for the Cardinals

I grew up in Phoenix so I have a reason to root for the Cards in the Superbowl.  Here I present reasons for you to support them as well:

1.) Kurt Warner is almost my age and has had yet another comeback of his career this season after being backup to Matt Leinart.
2.) Cardinals play air it out passing football.  Pittsburgh is more grind it out.  A passing quarterback is always more fun than watching a guy hand it off.
3.) Arizona has never won a Superbowl. Pittsburgh has won five. Why be greedy?
4.) Arizona is a red red state.  Pennsylvania is hopelessly blue.  Even after being called redneck racists or racist rednecks by John Murtha, Pennsylvania not only selects Barack Obama, they reelect John Murtha.
5.) Arizona already has suffered with their Senator McCain losing in November.  Don't you think they need a break?

Mall Cop A Sort of Review

My wife and I saw Mall Cop http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1114740/ tonight. An onion has many layers, this movie has pretty much one layer, fat jokes.  They pretty much exhaust the genre.  An overweight loser hypoglycemic is forced to work as a mall cop because he couldn't get through the policy academy.  This movie also exhausts every joke that can be told about a Segway http://www.segway.com/. I think in a reverse twist on product placement, Segway obviously didn't spend enough to keep their product out.  Bad guys lead by (WARNING PLOT SPOILER) a guy posing as a mall cop trainee, take over the mall to I think steal security codes from credit card machines to I guess steal the money from Black Friday sales.  The villains appear to be skate boarder types.  Their attempt to take over the mall is foiled by Paul Blart played by Kevin James http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0416673/ who pretty much single handedly takes them all down and gets the girl, the girl  http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1724323/ who sells hair extensions from a kiosk .  You may remember Kevin James from the TV sitcom King of Queens http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0165581/. King of Queens was part of a short lived trend where you had a slob of a husband with a hot wife, the other being According to Jim http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0285351/. With Mall Cop, there is action, drama, plot twists, romance and just enough potty humor.  It reminded me of Reindeer Games http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0184858/ in that they were both movies and have something vaguely to do with Christmas time.  That one was directed by John Frankenheimer http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001239/. This one was not. On the plus side, that one has Ben Affleck http://www.imdb.com/find?s=all&q=BEN+AFFLECK&x=0&y=0 and this one does not.  The bad guys here are named after Santa's reindeer.  Overall I'd give it a 2.5 out of four stars.

A Problem With The Historic Moment

The Obama Coronation.....er Inauguration exposes the inherent racism of the left and liberalism.  Nearly everyone left of center and much of the country got misty eyed during the Inauguration last week.  Everyone agreed it was historic and a great moment.  Was it a historic and great moment because he was the most qualified to hold the office? Clearly not.  He may not be qualified to run his kids PTA. The things he has run, namely funds from the Annenberg Foundation, he has run into the ground.  Is it because he is a great speaker? Not really, Alan Keyes would be President if that were the qualification.  Is it because of his ideas?  Not really. Because the few you are able to pin him down on and that he hasn't flipped flopped on are hard left and not in step with 75 percent of the country.   When you hear them speak however you quickly realize the only thing historic was that he is black.  Now agreed our country has had a history of slavery, Jim Crow, and general poor treatment of blacks.  But it isn't fair not to acknowledge the progress made by the country.  To me, it was only a matter of time that a black person would be elected President.  I was hoping he'd be a Republican but that would have guaranteed it would not be "historic."  The Bush administration had the first two and now only two African Americans to serve as Secretary of State.  No one seemed to care.  To those of us on the right, the only concern was the qualifications of the people, the content of their character if you will. To those on the left, they will always be Uncle Toms and sellouts.  Right now the top two candidates competing for chairman of the RNC happen to both be black.  No one cares.  Michael Steele and Ken Blackwell each have supporters within the party and no one gives  a damn that they are black.  With blacks voting 90-95% Democratic, Republicans aren't trying to shave off 5 percent or so by picking a black chairman.  For the record I like both but would probably prefer Ken Blackwell as a stronger voice for conservatives within the party.  Back to the Coronation, my child got to watch it live on television in her preschool because it was historic.  I am sure the same would have not happened for President McCain.  So now my preschooler knows about the historic moment but doesn't know why it is historic and I won't tell her.  To tell her is to explain that black is something different and should be treated differently.   It isn't and I want to keep my children as innocent as long as possible.  I'll leave it to the liberals to tell their kids that black is different.  I'll stick with MLK's idea about the content of their character.

Family Planning Our Way to Prosperity

Apparently the bailout includes the killing of babies.  Sorry for the harsh words but my wife had four miscarriages before my daughter was born and never once did we lose a fetus.  Speaker Pelosi  http://www.rhrealitycheck.org/node/9185 thinks family planning is a critical part of the stimulus plan. Meanwhile Japan shows us when family planning goes too far and birth rates fall to critical levels http://www.elliottwave.com/freeupdates/archives/2009/01/28/Japan-The-Land-Of-Falling-Birth-Rates.aspx
Read Mark Steyn about the demographic suicide of the west http://www.marksteyn.com/ .  Children are a blessing and should always be thought as such.
