Went to the Doctor Today with My Son

He is fine. Has a cough.  Kids are always sick.  I took him in to check it out and have a doctor with years of education, training, and experience to tell me he has a cough. It was a good night with not too many patients waiting for urgent care so we went right into the examination room to wait for the doctor.  I could bring toys to occupy my children but that would be too easy. I prefer to work with the palette I have.  I found the sink with the hot and cold foot pedals works for at least five and up to ten minutes.  Longer if your kid has OCD and needs to wash his/her hands a lot.  The trick is keeping your kid from hitting the "H" pedal and burning themselves. I find the rolling stool can provide two to five minutes of non stop entertainment. It provides rolling back and forth action and also the corkscrew of the chair is good for at least one minute of fun.  The tongue depressors, ear thingies, and cotton balls collectively can provide a few minutes but only if your kid is in the right mood.  If you had glue, you could construct one of those popsicle stick structures but again, you must use objects only from the room.  Unfortunately the computer and blood pressure machine are out of bounds for obvious reasons. Anyway my son is fine. He has a cough.  My moment of pride came when my son was offered a choice of stickers : a metallic smiley face, a care bear (or something similar without proper trademark) and a metallic American flag. My son chose the flag and said, "flag daddy."  That's my boy.

Faith the Size of a Mustard Seed

Who knows how much our faith will be tested in our lifetimes.  This man is a giant.  His entire family is killed by the tragic crash of a military plane into his home in San Diego.  Is he bitter? Is he planning a massive lawsuit?  No. His concern is the the pilot who survived the crash doesn't suffer too much, presumably guilt, for the crash.  He believes his wife and children are in Heaven.  This man clearly has the faith the size of a mustard seed and mountains did move. http://www.latimes.com/news/printedition/california/la-me-jetcrash10-2008dec10,0,2049016.story

I Hate Kwanzaa

The Imagination Movers on Disney modified their theme song for the holidays to sing,"It's Christmas, and Hannukah too. Happy Kwanzaa!" One of these things doesn't belong with the others.....  Can you guess which one is a made up holiday?  My wife's work had a holiday party for disadvantaged kids and they had tables to make Christmas ornaments, Hannukah ornaments and Kwanzaa ornaments.  The idea was a little silly as most of the kids were probably Roman Catholic as latinos.  The problem I have with Kwanzaa is not only that it is made up.  Techinically the 4th of July is made up. The problem is that it is made up for the wrong reasons.  Christmas and Hannukah even are religious oriented holidays. I know techinically Hannukah is not a holiday in the Torah but it does represent a victory of monotheism over polytheism.  Kwanzaa is neo-marxism pure and simple. Check out the seven principles of Kwanzaa http://www.officialkwanzaawebsite.org/NguzoSaba.shtml .Kwanzaa grew out out of black nationalism and was invented by a professor in Atlanta. Does anything worthwhile come out of liberal arts colleges?  The history is described here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kwanzaa .  There is also fundamentally wrong with Kwanzaa.  It says the Christmas is a white holiday and therefore blacks need an altnerative holiday to celebrate.  This is offensive. It wasn't Kwanzaa that drove the abolitionist movement and the subsequent civil rights movement.  It was Christianity.  When you understand the history of Kwanzaa you realize that blacks would be better off celebrating Festivus http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Festivas which is a less destructive and probably more legitimate holiday.

UPDATE : Ann Coulter's take on Kwanzaa is here : http://townhall.com/columnists/AnnCoulter/2008/12/24/my_triumph_over_kwanzaa!

I Am Not One to Enduldge in Consipiracies But

I see a pattern here.  Remember that the key thing to know about William Ayers is not that he was a terrorist 40 years ago when the President Elect was 7 years old.  It was that he realized then that he couldn't bring down this country by planting bombs. In fact, that unites Americans.  It has the opposite affect.  So he went into education where he could affect the next generation of children and brainwash them in the ways of the left and nihilism.  So here I see a similar conspiracy involving children that I may be the first to uncover.  Watch these disturbing videos and see a pattern : http://www.sproutonline.com/sprout/videos/detail.aspx?preset=cgoodnightshow and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=azIoIP4xlPU. Two different shows, two different networks and yet they have a perky and similar looking cast member named Nina. Does this sort of thing happen by accident? Just a coincidence?  I am not so sure.

The Sage Leaves KABC

Larry Elder has done his final show at KABC in Los Angeles after nearly 15 years on the air. http://www.larryelder.com/  I met Larry Elder once at a grocery store in Burbank.  I told him how much I admire him and it would be my dream for him to be governor of California as this was around the time of the recall of Gray Davis.  I got him to autograph my wife's coffee cup. I had spoken to him on the air as a caller to talk radio a couple of times before he got so popular that I couldn't get through anymore.  Larry is a great force in this country and particulary in the black community. Larry is from South Central Los Angeles. Larry is a libertarian Republican.  Larry voted for McCain.  A surreal moment on election night this year was when two stated conservative white hosts on KABC, Doug McIntyre and Al Rantel argued with Larry for supported McCain as they had cast their lots with Obama.  Things got so contentious that Larry nicknamed them the Marx Brothers after Karl and not Groucho presumably.   I have listened to countless times as Larry was called a sellout, uncle tom, and you name it by black caller after black caller because he didn't tow the line on issues like welfare, affirmative action, and general government intervention in areas where he felt there should be none.  Larry contends that the private sector is preferable nearly all of the time to the government. Larry was and is right. In an age where we see the socialization of the financial sector and soon the automobile industry, it is a shame we won't hear Larry on daily "standing athwart history yelling stop," as the late William F.Buckley did.  Larry will be missed but hopefully will find a new home on LA radio. His voice, intellect and grace is needed now more than ever.  Here for your listening enjoyment is Larry's theme by Jr. Walker and the All Stars, Way Back Home http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uIuN37lQwuQ

UPDATE: I found my autographed Starbucks coffee cup from the Sage. http://www.flickr.com/photos/32730061@N06/3115177826/

I Just Realized Something

I just realized a pattern with Democratic majority leaders in the Senate.  The last one before the current one is the new (or will be) Secretary of Health and Human Services, the former Senatar and majority leader from North Dakota, Tom Daschle http://www.latimes.com/news/nationworld/nation/la-na-obama-health12-2008dec12,0,7459722.story .  Those who remember Senator Daschle will notice a  curious parallel to Senator Harry Reid http://www.nbc13.com/vtm/news/local/article/video_auto_industry_could_have_bailout_deal_soon/50339/ . They both talk like Mr. Rogers http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n1FCITSkyrE .  If only he were alive I would suggest the late Mr. Rogers would be a vast improvement over Reid or Daschle.

My Thoughts on the Blag....Blagoy....the Governor from Illinois

or the scandal.  If you haven't heard, yet another Illinois governor is in hot water again and may go to jail.  My suspicion is he won't because he'll sing like a bird.  One of the puzzling things about the campaign is why the McCain campaign is why they didn't focus on the corruption of Chicago politics and the inevitable connection to Barack Obama.  Chicago politics make New Orleans look pristine by comparison.  "Man is conceived in sin and born in corruption, and he passeth from the stink of the dydie to the stench of the shroud," says Willie Stark in All the Kings Men by Robert Penn Warren based on the life of the real Governor Huey Long.  No one passes through the Democratic machine in Chicago and comes out clean.  Axelrod is a Chicago thug.  All of Obama's top people are part of the Daley machine.  More on the scandal here http://townhall.com/news/us/2008/12/10/analysis_scandal_threatens_to_dog_obama and here in Iowahawk http://iowahawk.typepad.com/iowahawk/2008/12/breaking-feds-seize-blagojevich-ebay-account.html .

Here is my dilemma as a lifetime registered Republican consevative American: I don't want Obama to fail as a President, particularly now as he appears to be crafting a middle of the road cabinet.  To be honest,  so far, this is the best Republicans could hope for considering WE LOST.  What is worse than Obama? How about President Biden? Not scared enough?  President Pelosi.

Good Thing they Are Closing Gitmo Down

and folks like this will be in our general population: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20081208/ap_on_re_la_am_ca/cb_guantanamo_sept11_trial .  Our government has tried to deport many of the detainees back to their home countries.  Their countries don't want them.  For some reason, other countries' governments prefer their terrorists in Gitmo and not in their general population.   Well good thing Gitmo will be gone and these people will be on Oprah hocking books or teaching at an American universities and plotting the destruction of the country.  Come to think of it, it does sound a lot like William Ayers.

My Trip To Costco

My son sat in the ride on Cadillac Escalade and told me he wanted one. I told him to ask Santa. He repeated, "Ask Santa car?" over and over again.  It does have a working cup holder and maybe a working FM radio. It did have a sticker that looked like a radio. It was a plug in vehicle and not a hybrid. Costco wanted 3 beans for the Cadillac and I realized that way things are going, we may be able to buy a real Cadillac for not much more. My daughter has a Lightening McQueen.  We bought it for her 3rd birthday and it wasn't a wise choice. At 3 my daughter is too small to reach the pedal and doesn't know how to steer either.  If she learns how to not use a turn signal, she'd be ready for LA freeway driving.  We had a great moment last year where she sat, bolstered by a pillow, drove the car forward and before she could crash into our fence I ran to the car to throw it in reverse where she would zoom backwards heading for our tree where I would run to throw it in forward again.  This I repeated for about 10 minutes, my exhaustion only exceeded by my laughter. My daughter wanted to drive McQueen to Legoland in Carlsdbad, California.  Geographically this is about 100 miles south of me.  Given that my daughter hasn't mastered steering, I thought it prudent to take the minivan.  McQueen hasn't been used much and lives under a tarp. Anyway Santa is bringing matching Mini Coopers because my wife and I are insane or Santa is. Here a couple of photos of the Coopers and their matching boxes http://www.flickr.com/photos/32730061@N06/3103556197/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/32730061@N06/3104386632/

Christmas Lights III : the Quest for Christmas Decorations

I spent another weekend attempting to bequeath the wonderful childhood I had to my children.  Hence the never ending attempts to track down Christmas lights.  Upon a friends recommendation, we drove out to Pasadena to Hastings Ranch.  It is more of an upscale subdivision than an actual ranch.  I didn't see much in terms of cattle. We didn't see much in terms of lights either.  Apparently it was a bit like arriving early in the afternoon at a Stones concert and watching the roadies connecting cables.  It seems that the show will be spectacular NEXT weekend.  No matter my daughter slept the entire way there and 97% back.  She awoke about 2 exits from my house crying for Christmas lights. So we did what we have done repeatedly over the past couple of weeks, we drove around random streets tracking down decorated homes. This brings me to a point.  The growth of cheap imports from China have enabled the average home owner to decorate their homes in an elaborate way that would have required Disney animatronics a decade or two ago.  The problem is everyone shops at the same stores so we saw at least three inflatable Santas on motorcycles (at separate houses, at the same house would be silly).  Come to think of it, since middle age men with the middle age spread are the only ones who can afford Harleys, perhaps it wasn't Santa afterall. Contrast this with the high art of my lawn http://www.flickr.com/photos/32730061@N06/3054821988/. We wound up at Travel Town and I forked over 21 bucks to ride the train to Santa Claus's house. Upon arriving, my children indicated that the didn't want to meet Santa. My daughter didn't like the beard thing.  My son pretty much does what big sister does or doesn't do what she doesn't do.  My four year old even announced that it wasn't the North Pole.  Here is a picture of the pretend North Pole with someone else's kids http://www.flickr.com/photos/32730061@N06/3091114349/ .  My kids were waiting in line to get back on the train back to the valley.

Here are some pictures of the adventure : http://www.flickr.com/photos/32730061@N06/3091934118/ , http://www.flickr.com/photos/32730061@N06/3091926916/ , http://www.flickr.com/photos/32730061@N06/3091923430/

Candy Cane Lane Part II

I took the kids to Candy Cane Lane again last night.  For those who haven't read my earlier post, Candy Cane Lane is neighborhood in Woodland Hills California where many of the houses are decorated for Christmas.  Me and a few dozen other cars made the slow crawl down the street looking at houses, pointing out Santa, Rudolph and Elmo.  The kids loved it and although I shattered their bedtimes with the trip, it was worth it.  Tonight we are going to try a neighborhood in Pasadena.  Here are some pictures : http://www.flickr.com/photos/32730061@N06/3087213064/http://www.flickr.com/photos/32730061@N06/3087191460/ , http://www.flickr.com/photos/32730061@N06/3086361845/ , I think my house needs this inflatable addition of the stalls for Santa's Reindeer http://www.flickr.com/photos/32730061@N06/3086360885/ , http://www.flickr.com/photos/32730061@N06/3086359663/ , and this one I loved, someone had painted wooden cutouts of comic book superheros along with real heroes from 9/11 http://www.flickr.com/photos/32730061@N06/3086357441/ .

UPDATE: Last night we went to the Festival of Lights by Los Angeles Department of Water and Power.  There we were amazed by the spectacle of lights, lights for as far as the eye could see along the frontage road leading into the park. Tail lights mainly.  It has been estimated that fully 10 % of the greenhouse gasses are produced by automobiles waiting in line to get in or out of the Festival of Lights. This was the last weekend of pedestrian only viewing : http://www.flickr.com/photos/32730061@N06/3089049263/ , http://www.flickr.com/photos/32730061@N06/3089047771/ , and http://www.flickr.com/photos/32730061@N06/3089045561/

This is Why the Jews Need a Homeland

in Israel.  This hatred is as old as mankind. Jew hatred didn't begin and end with the Nazis. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/asia/india/3539171/Mumbai-attacks-Jews-tortured-before-executed-during-hostage-crisis.html

Spent My Evening

Cruising around Burbank in the minivan playing the soundtrack to High School Musical 3 while looking for houses decorated with Christmas lights and other decorations.  While it certainly had a surrealistic feel to it, something made perfect sense in the San Fernando Valley and I could not stand to listen to God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen by the Barenaked Ladies again.  I have heard it already nearly 100 times this season and only busted it out last weekend. My daughter and son love it and I used to somewhere around time 80 or 90 through.  I am sure the HSM soundtrack will not wear as well.  Isn't this a typical Saturday night for everyone?

Mark Steyn on the Attacks in Mumbai

For clarity on the existential battle between the west and modern civilization (and I include British colonized India here) and Islam, look to Mark Steyn to boil it down to the lowest common denominator.  If you haven't already, everyone must read his book America Alone published a couple of years ago and many of his predictions unfold like prophecy.  Here MS focuses on the jihadist attacks in India : http://article.nationalreview.com/?q=YTk5YzgwZDc3NTliMDAwM2QxOGNjOWRmNTZjZTZmNDY=  .  And for the record to our friends on the left, the struggle in India didn't begin after we invaded Iraq. It predates the partition which created Pakistan.
